whaling

Japan leads the Pro-Whaling Nations. . .
Every southern hemispheres summer, Japan send its whaling fleet deep into the Antarctic where it plans to kill over 1000 whales annually for what it refers to as “scientific research” – a claim that we refute. This kill is illegal.
Many of the whales Japan targets are listed as endangered species. The kill takes place in violation of both the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, and the 1986 Moratorium on commercial whaling.”

Whale meat from Japan’s 'research' programme ends up for sale in markets and restaurants where it can be worth over US$16,500 per tonne – making even the smallest whale worth hundreds of thousands of dollars dead.
We are critical not only of the kill itself, but also of Japan’s claims it is for science. What they are doing in definitely not science. It’s just a cynical front for commercial whaling.

Japan exploits a loophole in the International Whaling Commission (IWC) that allows the killing of whales for the purposes of scientific research.

However, in twenty years Japan’s so-called research has not resulted in any significant published findings and has been roundly condemned by international scientists. What they are doing is an insult and a threat to the reputation of good science worldwide.

C. George Muller's latest book, Echoes in the Blue, ISBN: 9780615135946. Published by Koru Press Ltd. and now available from Amazon.com.

NZ author speaks out against whaling

January 2007, Richmond, NZ— New Zealand wildlife biologist and prize-winning novelist C. George Muller has announced the release of a new book heavily critical of Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Muller wrote Echoes in the Blue to raise awareness and speak out against what he calls, “The illegal slaughter happening just out of sight over the horizon.” His campaign includes a donation to 'Save the Whales' causes for every book sold. He has also set up the website www.cgeorgemuller.com to highlight the issue of illegal whaling and publicise the fight against it.

Echoes in the Blue has already received high praise from a Scientific Advisor to New Zealand’s IWC Commissioner, who described it as, “Very well researched including some extremely insightful observations about the nature of international politicking in the ongoing fight to protect whales.”

C. George Muller gave up a well-paying career in the corporate world to follow his heart and become a professional wildlife biologist. He has a Masters degree in biology, and has been involved in marine mammal research for the past 8 years – with findings published in several scientific papers. He has worked on projects for the US National Park Service, the New Zealand Department of Conservation, and more than one university. Echoes in the Blue was inspired by his experiences on the frontlines of wildlife research and conservation and was written while living and working in Kaikoura, the whale watching capital of New Zealand. He has also lived in Auckland, Christchurch, Nelson, and the Bay of Plenty.
Muller’s first novel won the 2005 Richard Webster Popular Fiction Award.

Echoes in the Blue is distributed in New Zealand by National Book Distributors and internationally by Ingram and Baker & Taylor. It is available directly from Amazon.com.

Do the Japanese really like whale-meat - or is it about power?

We hear that whale meat is being stock piled in Japan and that the whaling issue is just about POWER. Power that was taken away from Japan in 1945 when they lost the Second World War??

We are also told that the Japanese government are supplying FREE whale burgers in schools to attempt to get the children to acquire the taste for whale meat!

Have a look at this page!! I didn't believe what I was seeing! http://luna.pos.to/whale/gen_cook.html

In Tokyo, three anti-whaling protesters, including a man wearing a mask of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's face, carried a signboard saying "Welcome to the commercialisation meeting". One activist was dressed as a weeping whale.
Pasted to the sign were 10,000 yen ($82) notes and names of several countries, an allusion to charges by anti-whalers that Japan had bought pro-whaling votes at the IWC with foreign aid. Japan has repeatedly denied the allegations.

An email letter:

Subject Line: "Please Stop Killing Whales".

Dear Commissioner
I am writing to ask you to reconsider your position regarding Commercial Whaling. Your vote at the International Whaling Commission for the return of commercial whaling has been widely alleged to have been influenced by Japan. It is also alleged that aid from Japan is conditional on your voting with Japan for the return of commercial whaling. I understand that as a poor nation it is hard to refuse such "help" but I would urge you to consider also your countries pride and your standing amongst the international community. Please stop killing whales with your vote.

Please consider that:
There is NO need to kill whales as whale produce is no longer needed.
It is not neccesary to KILL whales for glean scientific information and there is no evidence that Japan has collected this information.
Whales are highly sentient beings that should be protected.
As it is impossible to ensure a "humane kill", the killing of Whales is often prolonged and cruel and should be stopped immediately.
Japan has a track record of cruelty and disregard for Whale Conservation.
It is my concern that if commercial whaling were allowed to return the same total disregard for sustainability would also return and once more whales would be hunted to the breach of extinction.

Please also consider that should you decide NOT to vote with Japan for the return of commercial whaling;
Pro whaling Tourists would be more likely to consider your country when deciding where to go on vacation.
You could enjoy a booming whale watching tourist industry.
You could be proud that your Nation is not a puppet of Japan.

Yours faithfully
(your name)

Boycott the Pro-Whaling countries by
NOT buying products or traveling there!

Iceland's dimishing tourism industry due to thousands of travellers NOT going to Iceland because of the slaughtering of hundreds of whales each year, is pressuring their government to stop whaling!
Keep up the pressure!

Don't go to all the counties listed below in this font colour!
- email their governments and tell them!
