Swim with Humpback Whales in the pristine waters of Moorea, Tahiti with Australian Master Photographer, Michael Smith and receive expert guidance to create your own incredible images.
Michael runs Into The Wild Photography in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia.
A multi-award winning nature photographer and AIPP Master of Photography, he has a passion for sharing experiences with other photographers.
Michael will guide you in all aspects of photographing the whales: preparation and planning, camera settings, image concepts and post-production techniques to make the most of your photographs.
He will also guide you on landscape photography sessions to round off the photographic experience available on Moorea!
These tours are designed for:
- Photography enthusiasts who want swim with humpbacks and to learn more camera and post-production skills!
- Experienced photographers who want to swim with humpbacks and get great images!
- Professional photographers -who want to swim with humpbacks and get great images for their port-folio!
The light and the visibility is beyond your wildest imagination and there are other marine mammals, Black-tip Reef sharks and stingrays and if we are lucky, Short-finned Pilots whales who usually travel with Oceanic White-tip sharks as well as various species of dolphins! There is time to also capture the stunning landscapes and scenery around the beautiful island of Moorea.
You will be staying right on the lagoon at the newly-renovated Moorea Island Beach in Tahitian-style bungalows with ensuite bathrooms, a verandah and outdoor table and chairs. They have a fabulous restaurant right on the beach, where a full breakfast is served each morning. The 4 delicious evening meals will be created by our own chef-team Barbara and Hans, made with love and fresh local ingredients, 200m along the beach at Moorea Beach Lodge!
The sunsets each night are definitely not to be missed!

Moorea, Tahiti – Itinerary:
Arrival Day: We meet you at Moorea airport or Ferry Terminal | transfer to Moorea Island Beach | Welcome dinner with Michael at Moorea Island Beach.
Day 1: Breakfast | pickup by whaleswim boat from the beach | boat briefing near Moorea Island Beach | how to swim with whales (so they don’t swim off) | out with the whales | lots of fun| return to beach | dinner.
Day 2 – 6: Breakfast | pickup by whaleswim boat from the beach | out with the whales | lots of fun | return to beach | editing sessions with Michael | Farewell dinner on last night at Moorea Beach Lodge.
Day 7: Breakfast | End of tour | transfer to the airport or ferry terminal.
Information for Photography Tour
- Some days we will be on the water with the whales during the morning from 7.30am other days it will be afternoons from 1.00 pm leaving time for editing sessions, landscape photography or some free time to experience other activities or just relax.
- You will be sent an itinerary with scheduled times for the 7 days, prior to your arrival day.
- You have 4 free evenings to arrange your dinner at restaurants of your choice.
This tour is suitable to all levels of photographers. A reasonable level of competence with your camera equipment is recommended.
- You will need to bring your own underwater camera/housing and we highly recommend a camera that can produce RAW files.
- Please bring your own weight belts and weights if possible, however we do have some weights for hire in Moorea for you. Check with Michael just prior to arrival.
- Please note, we will not be using strobes/or flash when photographing the whales.
- There will also be ample opportunities for land based photography so bring your favourite lenses and tripods too.
Some days, we will put aside time for editing sessions. This will be predominantly Lightroom based (and a small amount of Photoshop) so please bring your own laptop if you have one, with software already loaded and updated.
- Due to the remote nature of the location, please ensure you bring spare batteries, chargers, memory cards and accessories as this equipment will not be available to purchase in town.

Prestigious Proffessional Photography Award 2019!
Michael won the Silver Medal in the ‘Nature’ catagory, of the prestigous World Photographic Cup 2019 in Norway with this stunning image of a humpback mother and her calf in the pristine waters of Moorea Tahiti!
Michael was part of the Australian team, who took out the top prize, Gold medal for ‘the country with the most medals’ in the competition!
